The results tell a powerful story. Since 2023, HISD students have made significant academic gains across grade levels and subject areas, while the district has increased the number of highly rated schools, reduced teacher vacancies, improved educator compensation, and addressed longstanding financial challenges. These outcomes demonstrate what is possible when schools maintain high expectations and remain focused on student achievement.
Since the start of the state intervention, HISD’s state takeover has seen unprecedented gains across nearly every academic area.
- Reading proficiency has increased across grade levels
- Biology increased by 33 points
- Algebra I increased by 24 points
- 8th grade math increased by 19 points
- 4th grade reading increased by 14 points
- English II increased by 14 points
Other major wins through HISD
- AP test participation +23%
- Students scoring 3 or better on AP tests +53%
- Students scoring 5 on AP tests +48%
- Closed a structural budget deficit
- Implemented the largest pay for performance plan in the country
- Cut teacher vacancies to 0 and boosted teacher pay above the state average
- HISD improved from 93 A & B rated schools to 197
- Went from 121 D or F rated schools to a mere 18
- 100,000 more students are now attending better-performing schools than before the intervention began.
